Building Community in a Small Town: How Raven 425 Rise Above Created a Movement in Scotch Creek

Introduction

In 2019, if you told us that a CrossFit gym owner from Maui and a Canadian entrepreneur would build a wellness brand in a town of 500 people, we would have laughed.
Today, Raven 425 Rise Above isn't just a business in Scotch Creek—it's become part of the community's fabric. Our coffee fuels local entrepreneurs. Our apparel outfits adventure seekers on Shuswap Lake. Our books are read at bedtime in homes throughout the North Shuswap.
This is the story of how we built more than a brand. We built a community. And how you can apply these lessons—whether you're starting a business, leading a team, or just trying to make your corner of the world a little better.

The Beginning: From Maui to the Shuswap

Max's Story:
I was running a successful CrossFit gym in Maui when I met Sheena. She walked into my gym one morning, and something just clicked. We started talking about our dreams—hers of building something meaningful in her home country of Canada, mine of creating a brand that actually helped people.
The idea for Raven 425 started on a beach in Maui. We wanted to build something that combined everything we believed in: fitness, wellness, community, and quality products that actually made a difference.
The Move:
When we decided to relocate to Canada, everyone thought we were crazy. "Why would you leave Hawaii for British Columbia?" they'd ask. But Sheena had a vision. She knew the Shuswap. She knew the community. And she knew there was something special about this place that the world hadn't discovered yet.
We landed in Scotch Creek with a dream, some savings, and absolutely no idea what we were doing.

Year One: Learning the Hard Way

The Mistakes:
Oh, we made them. We launched products before they were ready. We tried to be everything to everyone. We spent money on marketing that didn't work. We opened a physical location before we had the inventory to fill it.
The Lesson:
In a small town, you can't fake it. People know each other. They talk. If your product isn't good, word spreads fast. But if you show up, admit your mistakes, and genuinely care? That spreads even faster.
The Turning Point:
About six months in, we were struggling. Sales were slow. We were burning through cash. One morning, a local named Jim walked into our shop. He didn't buy anything. He just wanted to talk.
Jim had lived in Scotch Creek for 40 years. He told us stories about the community—the floods, the fires, the way everyone showed up for each other. And then he said something that changed everything:
"You guys have good hearts. But you're trying to sell to people. Stop selling. Start showing up. The rest will follow."

The Shift: From Business to Community

We Started Listening:
Instead of pushing products, we started asking questions. What did people actually need? What were they struggling with? What would make their lives better?
What We Learned:
  • Locals wanted a gathering place—somewhere to meet friends, work remotely, or just sit with a good cup of coffee
  • There was no high-quality activewear available locally—people were driving to Kamloops or ordering online
  • Parents wanted meaningful books for their kids—not just entertainment, but stories that taught values
  • The wellness community was fragmented—yoga here, CrossFit there, no central hub
We Started Showing Up:
We sponsored the local fun run. We hosted free community workouts. We opened our space for meetings, book clubs, and pop-up markets. We gave away more coffee than we sold some months.
And slowly, something shifted. People started coming in not just to buy, but to connect. They brought their friends. They shared our posts. They wore our gear around town like a badge of honor.

The Four Pillars of Community Building

Looking back, everything we did fell into four categories. These are the pillars that built Raven 425 Rise Above:
1. Show Up Consistently
Community isn't built through grand gestures. It's built through showing up, day after day, even when it's hard.
  • We open at 7 AM every day, rain or shine
  • We host community events monthly, even when turnout is low
  • We support other local businesses, even when we're competing for the same customers
  • We respond to every message, every comment, every review
The Result: People trust us because we're reliable. They know we'll be there.
2. Give More Than You Take
In the early days, we gave away so much free coffee and merchandise that our accountant had questions. But we were playing the long game.
  • Free coffee for first responders
  • Discounts for teachers, healthcare workers, and students
  • Sponsorships for local sports teams and events
  • Space for community organizations to meet
The Result: When we needed support—during slow seasons, during the pandemic—the community showed up for us. They remembered.
3. Create Spaces for Connection
Our physical space, The Raven Compound, was designed intentionally. Yes, we sell products. But more importantly, we created:
  • Comfortable seating for people to work or meet friends
  • A community board with local events and opportunities
  • Monthly gatherings—yoga classes, book clubs, entrepreneur meetups
  • A vibe that says "stay awhile" not "buy something and leave"
The Result: The Raven Compound became a third place—not home, not work, but somewhere people choose to spend time.
4. Tell Stories That Matter
People don't buy products. They buy stories, values, and belonging.
We share:
  • The story of our Nicaraguan coffee farmers
  • The meaning behind our raven logo
  • Customer success stories and transformations
  • Our own struggles and failures
The Result: Customers become advocates. They wear our brand because it represents something they believe in.

The Results: By The Numbers

Three years after that conversation with Jim, here's where we stand:
  • 500+ local customers who shop with us regularly
  • 1,000+ online customers across Canada
  • 50+ local businesses and organizations we've partnered with
  • 100+ community events hosted at The Raven Compound
  • 3 children's books published, read in homes across North America
  • 1 thriving spa (Contrast By Raven) that employs 4 local practitioners
  • Countless friendships formed, businesses launched, and lives changed in our space
But the numbers that matter most? The ones we can't quantify:
  • The kid who wears their Raven hoodie for confidence on the first day of school
  • The entrepreneur who launched their business from our coffee shop
  • The community that rallied around us during tough times

Lessons for Building Community Anywhere

You don't have to own a business to build community. These lessons apply whether you're:
  • Starting a business in a small town
  • Leading a team at a big company
  • Trying to make friends in a new city
  • Building an online community
1. Start with Service
Ask not what your community can do for you, but what you can do for your community. Seriously. Before you ask for anything, give something. Give consistently. Give generously.
2. Be Patient
Community doesn't happen overnight. We hosted events where three people showed up. We sponsored things that didn't drive immediate sales. We showed up for months before we saw results.
Trust the process. The compound effect of small, consistent actions is real.
3. Be Authentic
People can smell inauthenticity from a mile away. Don't try to be something you're not. Don't make promises you can't keep. Don't pretend to care about things you don't actually care about.
Your community will accept your flaws if you're honest about them. They won't accept fakeness.
4. Create Rituals
Communities are built on shared experiences. Create rituals that bring people together regularly:
  • Weekly coffee meetups
  • Monthly book clubs
  • Annual events
  • Daily check-ins
Rituals create belonging.
5. Celebrate Others
The fastest way to build community? Celebrate the people in it. Share their wins. Promote their businesses. Show up for their events. Make it about them, not you.
We spend as much time promoting other local businesses as we do promoting our own. And you know what? It comes back tenfold.

The Future: Rising Stronger Together

We're just getting started. Our vision for the next three years:
Expand the Community:
  • Launch a "Raven Representatives" program—local ambassadors who spread our mission
  • Host quarterly community summits for entrepreneurs and wellness professionals
  • Create an online community platform for customers across Canada
Deepen the Impact:
  • Launch a foundation supporting youth wellness programs in the Shuswap
  • Expand our Nicaraguan coffee partnerships to include educational programs for farmers' children
  • Publish more children's books that teach resilience, kindness, and courage
Grow the Brand:
  • Open a second location (maybe in Kamloops or Kelowna?)
  • Launch wholesale partnerships with gyms and wellness centers across BC
  • Build Raven 425 into a nationally recognized wellness brand
But through all the growth, our mission stays the same: We Rise Stronger Together.
